But here's the catch: independence must be taught.

Why balance matters

The most effective classrooms don't lean too heavily in one direction. As teachers, our role is to create the structure, support, and scaffolding that make both modes of learning successful, whether that means setting clear expectations before releasing students to work in groups, or building in reflection time after independent tasks to help students process and apply what they've learned.

Teaching students how to learn, independently and collaboratively, is just as important as what they learn. When we intentionally build these skills, we give students the tools to succeed not just in our classrooms, but in life.
